Jamie Mai

Jamie Mai first caught the attention of the investing world when he was profiled in Michael Lewis’ The Big Short. By buying credit default swaps on CDOs prior to the 2008 financial crisis, Jamie’s firm, Cornwall Capital, made over 80 times its capital. A history major in college, Jamie worked at private equity firms Golub Capital and Housatonic Partners before founding Cornwall Capital in 2002. While most value investors invest only when they are confident they won’t lose a significant amount of money, Jamie thinks about margin of safety in probabilistic terms. Cornwall looks across the risk spectrum for opportunities that are often “off limits” to most value investors- from low probability/high return investments, to ambitious special situations. A critical step in Jamie’s investing process is to test his hypotheses with smart investors and he therefore plans to share a new idea at the 2014 Santangel’s Investor Forum.
